Itchy Skin After Swimming? Natural Ways to Soothe Sensitive Skin

Does your child get itchy skin after swimming in pools, ponds, lakes, or the ocean?

For kids with sensitive skin, eczema, or allergies, summer activities can sometimes lead to itchy skin after swimming, along with irritation, red bumps, and uncomfortable flare-ups. In fact, chlorine, algae, sand, sunscreen, and sun exposure can all contribute to skin irritation during the summer months.

When I was growing up, we had a huge pond where I swam almost daily during the summer. Occasionally, algae would bloom, and inevitably, we would swim right through it. As a result, itchy skin afterward was almost guaranteed. Honestly, it was pretty gross.

Fortunately, there are simple ways to help soothe irritated skin naturally and support the skin barrier after swimming. Additionally, taking a few preventative steps before and after water activities may help reduce irritation and keep sensitive skin more comfortable throughout the summer.

Why Kids Get Itchy Skin After Swimming

Summer water exposure can be particularly irritating for children who already have eczema, allergies, or sensitive skin.

Common triggers include:

  • Chlorine from pools
  • Salt water from the ocean
  • Algae exposure in lakes and ponds
  • Sand and sweat
  • Frequent sun exposure
  • Certain sunscreens or skincare products

All of these can disrupt the skin barrier and increase inflammation, dryness, and itching.

Conventional Treatments for Itchy Skin After Swimming

Conventional treatment often includes topical steroid creams like hydrocortisone and antihistamines like Benadryl. These absolutely have their place and can be very helpful when needed.

But in our practice, we also like to support the skin naturally whenever possible, using simple integrative strategies that help calm inflammation and support the skin barrier.

One of the best first steps is showering or rinsing off immediately after swimming. From there, we focus on restoring and soothing the skin.

A Natural Post-Swimming Skincare Routine for Kids

Here are three of my favorite products for soothing irritated summer skin naturally.

Briotech Topical Skin Spray for Itchy Skin After Swimming

Briotech Topical Skin Spray is a soothing hypochlorous acid (HOCl) mist that can help calm itching and redness without stinging.

It’s especially helpful for kids with sensitive skin who dislike thick creams or ointments.

Apply the spray to clean, dry skin after swimming, then allow it to air dry completely for about 30 seconds.

Organic Manuka Skin Soothing Balm for Sensitive Skin

After the Briotech dries, I recommend applying Organic Manuka Skin Soothing Balm to help hydrate and protect the skin barrier.

This rich, nourishing cream contains antibacterial manuka honey and helps calm irritated skin while locking in moisture.

HKHM Hist-Assist for Seasonal Skin Support

For additional support from the inside out, HKHM Hist-Assist can help support a healthy immune response naturally.

Unlike many traditional antihistamines, HKHM Hist-Assist helps support the body without causing drowsiness or unwanted side effects. It’s also available in kid-friendly chewables.

Simple Tips to Prevent Itchy Skin After Swimming

A few small habits can go a long way in helping sensitive skin stay calm during the summer months.

Here are a few things I recommend:

  • Rinse off shortly after swimming
  • Moisturize immediately after showering
  • Avoid letting wet swimsuits sit on the skin too long
  • Support hydration consistently
  • Use gentle, fragrance-free skincare products
  • Support immune and histamine balance naturally when needed

Together, these strategies can help reduce itching and help kids enjoy summer activities more comfortably.
