How to Avoid Post-Pool Day Meltdowns

Have you ever Googled: “Why is my child losing it after swimming?”

Your child is sobbing over a soggy Goldfish cracker. You’re gripping the steering wheel like it’s a stress ball. Sound familiar?

Let’s talk about why pool days often end in total emotional chaos, and, more importantly, how to stop the meltdowns before they start. Here are three surprising causes of post-pool day meltdowns and what you can do about it.

#1 – Chlorine

Chlorine isn’t just hard on the skin—it affects the gut, too!

Especially for children with eczema, asthma, or allergies, chlorine exposure can stress the immune system and gut lining, triggering inflammation.

That internal inflammation can show up as irritability, itching, or even an upset stomach.

Histamine helps “hustle out” whatever’s bothering you (which is a good thing!). However, in kids with eczema, asthma, allergies, or gut inflammation, their immune system is more sensitive, and so the histamine response can be way too enthusiastic.

What to Do:

1️⃣ Stay consistent with our gentle, yet robust probiotic, HKHM Plantadophilus, plus our HKHM Digestive Enzymes to support the gut.

The HKHM Plantadophilus begins to decrease gut inflammation, and our HKHM Digestive Enzymes contain a high amount of lipase and protease, which break down fats and proteins.

These are the first supplements I always recommend as part of our integrative supplement strategy.

2️⃣ Use vitaminc C and taurine for targeted support with neutralizing the effects of chlorine.

Mix 1/4 scoop of the HKHM Vitamin C Powder into a glass of water and drink.

Additionally, take 1 capsule of taurine the morning of the pool day. It remains in the system for about 48 hours and helps bind and detoxify chlorine.

#2 – Blood Sugar Crashes & Dehydration

What to Do:

Sip on Ultima Electrolytes before, during, and after pool time. These packets contain 6 key electrolytes (magnesium, calcium, potassium, chloride, phosphorus, and sodium) as well as vitamin C and zinc.

Also, pack your cooler with protein-rich snacks and fruits and veggies to keep blood sugar stable (think nut butter and apples, or hummus with veggies).

#3 – Overstimulation

Sensory overload is real. Bright sun, loud splashes, kids yelling, smelly sunscreens, and social energy. Even the most social kid can hit their limit.

What to Do:

Give your child’s nervous system a hug with a post-pool magnesium popsicle. 🫶 (Remember, magnsium is the mineral that tells the body to relax.)

Our HKHM Magnesium powder is available in a tasty strawberry flavor. 🍓 Simply mix a scoop of the powder with water, and pour into these freezer tubes.

Hand the popsicles out for your kids to enjoy on the car ride home, helping them to cool down—physically and emotionally.
