Molluscum Contagiosum: What Parents Need to Know

It seems about once a month, I get an email from parents asking how to treat their child’s wart(s). Typically, these parents are asking about molluscum contagiosum. These are common, yet irritating skin conditions that are common in childhood.

They are caused by a virus and are easily transmitted through direct contact with the skin of an infected person, and they are very contagious.

Molluscum contagiosum, also known as “water warts,” look like small, white, raised bumps that can become itchy and sore.

I have no randomized controlled trials to prove this is effective. However, it is very inexpensive, harmless, and easy (and funny)!

All jokes aside, there really is another unconventional, at-home option available.

Tea Tree Oil and Iodine Tincture for Molluscum Contagiosum

Applications of tea tree oil combined with iodine twice per day significantly reduces molluscum lesions.

While the children’s studies have shown a reduction in symptoms with just the application of tea tree oil, the combination of tea tree oil and iodine have offered the greatest results.

Tea tree oil is a known antiseptic. But it can cause an allergic reaction in some children. Test a small unaffected area with the tea tree oil, and if there is no reaction within 24 hours it is likely safe to use.

NOTE: children shouldn’t consume tea tree oil. Don’t apply tea tree oil on a child who isn’t old enough to understand the importance of not eating the oil.

You can also consider diluting tea tree oil 1:1 with jojoba oil to reduce irritation.

Apply this combination for two to four weeks. If you do not see a response, we recommend having a dermatologist assess and offer treatment options.

Immune Boosting Supplements for Molluscum Contagiosum

Sporebiotic + IgG

Sporebiotic supports the microbiome and its ability to improve communication within the immune system. IgG immunoglobulin can help modulate immune responses and enhance the clearance of viruses, which aids in the skin’s defense. Since warts are caused by viruses (HPV), improving immune surveillance is key.

Twice daily dosing (based on dosing chart) for 8–12 weeks alongside our other supports.

HKHM PureZyme or ProZyme

Systemic enzymes may help modulate inflammation and break down fibrin around the warts, possibly making topical agents more effective.

Twice daily dosing (based on dosing chart) for 8–12 weeks alongside our other supports.
