Magnesium Deficiency: How a Micronutrient Has a ‘Macro’ Impact

In my practice, we often discuss the benefits of magnesium in relation to helping with constipation. (The HKHM Advanced Magnesium is a part of our Constipation Bundle.)

While it’s true magnesium plays a critical role in supporting regular bowel movements, several other systems also require magnesium.

In addition to constipation, other signs of magnesium deficiency include:

  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea
  • Fatigue
  • Asthma
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Headaches
  • Muscle cramps
  • High blood pressure
  • Heart palpitations
  • ADHD
  • Anxiety

Shockingly, 50% of the US population does not get adequate amounts of magnesium on a daily basis, which is a real problem considering how critical this nutrient is for optimal health!

Furthermore, many medications can deplete magnesium including antacids, Albuterol inhalers, stimulants (for ADHD), and antidepressants or antianxiety medications.

If you or your child are on one or more of these prescription medications or are experiencing any of the symptoms listed above, I highly recommend getting on a magnesium supplement.

As you can see, magnesium is extremely important and yet so easy to be deficient in. To that end, many of the patients in our practice are on a magnesium supplement subscription.

Lastly, although it can be challenging to get adequate amounts from food alone, try to incorporate more foods into your family’s diet that are high in magnesium.

Foods high in magnesium include green leafy vegetables like spinach, nuts, pumpkin seeds, chia seeds, flaxseed

Magnesium offers a simple way to make a huge impact on your health–it’s one of my favorite minerals!

I am quite active (swimming, yoga, and pickleball) so although I eat greens, nuts, and seeds daily, I take 4 HKHM Advanced Magnesium caps daily, which means I go through one bottle of 180 caps every 6 weeks.

The HKHM Advanced Magnesium is available in two forms – capsule or powder.
