How To Treat Asthma Naturally: 3 Crucial Nutrients

If your child is constantly reaching for their inhaler or you’re frustrated with only managing symptoms instead of addressing the root cause, you’re not alone. Most people think asthma is just a lung issue, but what if I told you it is, in part, an inflammation issue? Using an integrative approach to reducing inflammation, we can begin to address the root cause and treat asthma naturally.

Why Conventional Asthma Treatment Falls Short

In conventional medicine, we’re trained to reduce inflammation externally by using steroids to decrease inflammation. We use steroids topically, orally, through IV, or inhaled into the lungs or nose.

While these treatments are often necessary to get significant symptoms under control, they don’t address the root cause of chronic inflammation that leads to recurrent wheezing and poorly controlled asthma.

Visual for how airways close when experiencing asthma symptoms.

The pharmaceutical industry knows inflammation well—it’s a billion-dollar industry of anti-inflammatory medications that powerfully decrease inflammation at the moment, but they don’t tackle the underlying issue.

In my practice, I help families not only get control of their child’s symptoms externally but also work with them to reduce inflammation internally. The better we can manage a child’s systemic inflammation, the less we need to rely on meds like inhalers and steroids to control asthma.

How To Treat Asthma Naturally: The 3 Essential Nutrients for Relief

Instead of just playing defense, we can support the body’s natural processes through food and supplement support. Here are three powerful, science-backed nutrients that help to manage asthma (and overall inflammation) by working with your child’s biochemistry.

1. Magnesium

When asthma flares, the muscles around the airways tighten like a squeezing straw, making it harder to breathe.

Magnesium helps relax these muscles, opening up the airways so oxygen can flow more freely. Many asthma medications actually deplete magnesium, making supplementation even more important.

Bonus tip: Our HKHM Advanced magnesium also helps with constipation. You can read more about that in my other blog, “The Best Magnesium Supplement for Constipation.”

2. Omega-3 Fish Oil

Omega-3s reduce inflammation in the airways, helping to prevent the swelling and mucus buildup that make asthma worse.

Since most children don’t eat enough cold-water fish like salmon or mackerel (or chia, flax, and hemp seeds), supplementing with high-quality fish oil provides the essential fats their body needs to support lung function and overall immune health.

3. Vitamin D3

Did you know Vitamin D acts more like a hormone than a vitamin, influencing immune health, inflammation, and even lung function?

It is extremely important in the wintertime. Normally in our practice, I suggest families supplement with Vitamin D in the wintertime, and then we take a break in the summertime when you’re getting 15 to 30 minutes of sun exposure daily.

These nutrients aren’t just “nice-to-haves”—they’re foundational for helping children with asthma breathe easier, and, in reality, most of us aren’t getting enough of them in our Standard American Diet

We Make It Easy to Treat Asthma Naturally

We’ve put together an Asthma Jump Start Bundle + Asthma Jump Start Guide, which walks you through how to use these supplements effectively with dosing instructions by age.
