Eczema, Asthma, and Allergies in Kids: How to Beat Pollen

Seeing eczema, asthma, & allergies in kids has become an unfortunately common occurence in our practice.

Just last month, I saw a sweet 2-year-old in my clinic who was struggling with severe eczema, relentless itching, wheezing (asthma), and recurrent ear infections—he’d even developed molluscum contagiosum (those little white viral bumps).

The Relationship Between Eczema, Asthma, and Allergies in Kids

In his short two years, he’d already been on several rounds of antibiotics and albuterol to manage his symptoms. He is one of the 50-80% of kids with eczema and asthma who also have environmental allergies.

Additional triggers of inflammation for this little guy’s eczema: dairy, staph bacteria on his skin, and hidden mold in the family’s HVAC system and crawl space.

We removed dairy from his diet, used the Dr. Aron’s topical compound along with supplements, and started an antihistamine while they get the mold in their home remediated.

This was our 3rd visit with him (4 months after we began treatment), and his skin is almost completely clear.

Inflammation builds over time and does not decrease overnight. It’s like healing a sprained ankle. It can take 3 to 6 months (or longer) to see some of the more long-lasting changes.

Prevention is best whenever possible, which is why I always encourage families to stay ahead of inflammation before it spirals.

In conventional medicine, we often default to strong steroids because we wait until symptoms are already in full swing. Integrative medicine is all about using the best of both conventional and integrative medicine.

If your child struggles with eczema, asthma, or allergies, we want to start reducing inflammation and using natural products that help address histamine before pollen season makes everything worse. But it’s not to late to get started on your journey to reducing inflammation and finding lasting relief.

PSA: If you’re in the Charlotte, NC area where I am located, pollen counts are typically the highest the last week of March and the second week of April. So thankfully, the worst is probably behind us!
